Hull University Big Band
Jazz fans will want to check out the University of Hull Big Band, another returning act that impressed audiences at the Merge Arts Festival 2010.
The Big Band has had a very successful year in all aspects. The level of musicianship this year has been of a particularly high standard and this is reflected in the band’s now increasingly large repertoire which features most types of music from the Village People’s YMCA to Glenn Miller’s In the Mood and Charles Mingus’s Moanin, which has been brought about this year by President and Musical Director Alex French.
Hull University’s Big Band have played many gigs this year, at such venues as Patrington Church, Lazaat and their monthly jazz nights in the University of Hull’s John McCarthy Bar. The band has mustered a thoroughly enjoyable year both in terms of music-making and the social aspect of their music.
